Weather Service warns St. Lawrence County residents of hazardous travel conditions with snow, freezing rain

A Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service is in effect for snow, sleet and freezing rain through 5 p.m. in St. Lawrence County, with an accumulation of as much as three inches of heavy wet snow. The Weather Service warns that could make for hazardous travel.

The temperature has been dropping since midnight, from 31 at midnight to 22 degrees at 11:30 this morning at Potsdam's Damon Field airport.

But precipitation is expected to change to rain from south to north this afternoon and tonight.

Highs today will be in the 30s.

Then temperatures are expected to rise into the 40s tonight and stay there Friday before dropping into the 20s Friday night.

A cold front will move through the North Country on Friday with rain mainly in the morning and probably tapering off by afternoon, the NWS says.

Then a ridge of high pressure will build east from the Great Lakes Friday night and will be over the North Country on Saturday with fair and dry weather expected.

The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:

• Today: Snow and sleet likely before 3pm, then freezing rain likely between 3pm and 5pm, then freezing rain likely, possibly mixed with rain after 5pm. Cloudy, with a high near 35. Northeast wind around 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Total daytime ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

• Tonight: Rain, mainly before 5am, then drizzle likely after 5am. Temperature rising to around 47 by 4am. East wind 8 to 14 mph becoming south after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

• Friday: Drizzle likely before 8am, then rain likely, mainly between 8am and 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 48. Southwest wind 9 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 24. West wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light north after midnight.

• Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 45. Calm wind.

• Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 30. Calm wind.

• Sunday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 55. Southwest wind 3 to 7 mph.

• Sunday Night: A 50 percent chance of rain after 2am. Cloudy, with a low around 36. Light south wind.

• Monday: Rain likely, mainly after 8am. Cloudy, with a high near 45. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

• Monday Night: Rain likely before 11pm, then rain and snow likely between 11pm and 2am, then snow likely after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27. North wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

• Tuesday: A chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 40. Northwest wind 11 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

• Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 24. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light after midnight.

• Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 47. Southwest wind 6 to 10 mph.
