Volunteer marshals sought for International St. Lawrence Junior Carp Tournament Aug. 18-20

CANTON -- The St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce’s 9th Annual St. Lawrence International Junior Carp Tournament needs volunteer marshals for the August 18 to 20 event.

This is also the last week of reduced-fee preregistration for the tournament.

Marshals help net fish, give the young anglers pointers, assist with baiting, and make sure everyone plays by the rules. It’s a great chance to help make the youngsters’ experience the best that it can be while being on the St. Lawrence River for a two days.

The nation’s largest tournament of its kind is open to 11- to 18-year-olds who will fish a 30-mile stretch of the river from Massena to Ogdensburg. The event includes the popular Mort Backus & Sons pre-tournament fishing school, and the chance to learn about carp fishing from local experts. Contestants can be veteran anglers, or totally new to the sport. All carp caught during the tournament are tagged and returned live to the St. Lawrence River.

All volunteers who sign up for marshaling duties – even those who have given their time in the past – must attend one of the following training sessions:

• Saturday July 16, 10 a.m., Hawkins Point Visitors Center, Massena

• Saturday, July 30, 10 a.m., Waddington Little Sucker Brook

• Saturday, August 13, 10 a.m., Customs House, Ogdensburg

• Thursday, August 18, 4 p.m. Waddington Arena

For more information, contact Sue Casaday at the Chamber, 315-386-4000; or by email at scasaday@stlawrencecountychamber.org.

Entry fees for the tournament remain the same as last year: $100 if registration is received by July 15, or $125 after then. Contestants can register to fish individually, with a friend, or as part of a team of up to four anglers.

A range of cash prizes and trophies are awarded in divisions for boys, girls, and teams, along with a grand champion cash prize.
