CANTON -- Canton native James Santimaw has been appointed as Canton's next police chief.

The Village Board of Trustees approved the appointment unanimously at a special meeting this morning.

Santimaw was born and raised in Canton and graduated from Canton High School and joined the village police force as an officer in 1998. He was promoted to sergeant in 2003. As an officer, Santimaw received the Canton Police Department Medal of Honor and was a New York State MADD Award recipient. As sergeant he received several Chiefs Commendations, an Outstanding Service Award, and the New York State Liberty Award. Santimaw also servers as a general topics instructor at the St. Lawrence County Sullivan Law Enforcement Academy and has been an adjunct instructor in SUNY Canton's Criminal Justice Department.

"We had a very comprehensive application and interview process, carried out by the board as a whole," said Mayor Michael Dalton. "We were lucky to have two outstanding candidates. The board was impressed with the caliber of the internal Canton PD candidates."

"Jim's vision and expectations for the department are exciting to the board," Dalton said. "His goals of improving communications, saving money, and enhancing relationships for the village and its residents resonate with the work of our board and our community."

"I am passionate about supporting the village I was raised in, as well as the lives of people who helped to shape my life," Santimaw said in the announcement of the appointment.

In the interview process, he laid out ideas and plans that will “help promote a safe, healthy, wholesome environment that will improve the quality of life for Canton's citizens,” the announcement said.

Santimaw's appointment as Canton Chief of Police is effective immediately.
