CANTON – Quick response by Canton firefighters doused a potentially dangerous vehicle fire Tuesday night, Nov. 21, outside the Mountain Mart on East Main St.
The fire remains under investigation by the St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team and the Canton Police Department. No further details were made available by police. The vehicle was not an electric vehicle.
At 6:34 p.m. Canton Fire, along with Canton Rescue and Canton police, were dispatched to a reported car fire at the Mountain Mart on East Main Street.
Captain Dan Holcomb was on scene within two minutes reporting a fully involved car fire parked in front of the Mountain Mart threatening the building, said Canton Fire Chief Robert Crowe. Assistant Chief Shawn McGregor and Chief Crowe arrived right after Captain Holcomb and deployed the four fire extinguishers from the fuel island in an effort to knock the fire down and lessen the exposure to the building.
Engine 8 arrived and its crew deployed a handline to knock down and extinguish the fire. The vehicle was a total loss and there was some damage to the building. Nineteen members of the department responded and all units were back in service at 8:30 p.m, Crowe reported.
Crowe thanked Mountain Mart along with Dunkin Donuts and Kentucky Fried Chicken who provided chicken and drinks to the members while they were on scene.
“The support from the community was greatly appreciated,” said Crowe.
