Vandalism continues at Kid’s Kingdom in Ogdensburg

OGDENSBURG – Kid’s Kingdom, a popular park in Ogdensburg, continues to be vandalized on a regular basis, according Matthew Curatolo, city recreation director.

Vandals recently kicked out sections of wooden fencing at the park, but in the past it has been defaced and even lit on fire.

Curatolo says the vandalism often picks up as the temperature rises and this year appears to be no exception, with reports coming in on a weekly basis.

City police already patrol the area regularly, but vandals still continue to target it.

In the past the council has considered installing cameras at the park, a move supported by Curatolo and the Ogdensburg Police Department. Council members too have expressed support of putting up cameras but concerns of public privacy have also surfaced in those discussions.

Councilors are raised concerns regarding the resolution on security cameras, which are often of too poor quality to help catch offenders.

Curatolo investigated options for city dating as far back as 2014. Then, he explained that the camera footage would be stored for roughly 30 days and only examined when an incident occurred.

Curatolo also presented a second option to the council then. He said the city could install wireless routers, at the visitors’ center and the camera site, so the footage could be viewed directly at the visitors’ center.

In his 2014 estimate the cost for installing four cameras at Kids Kingdom was projected at around $2,000, with an additional $440 to include the ability view the footage at the visitors’ center.
