Union threatening to shut down St. Lawrence Seaway rescinds strike notice as long as progress in talks takes place by Monday

The St. Lawrence Seaway says a union threatening to shut the Seaway down Friday has put off the strike notice it issued earlier this week.

The union, UNIFOR, has rescinded the 72-hour notice of intent to strike that it initially issued Tuesday, Oct. 28 “as negotiations forge ahead between the union and The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC),” a news release from the corporation said.

Consequently, the SLSMC is postponing the final steps of its contingency plan to shut the Seaway down.

“At present, ships are continuing to navigate on the Seaway,” the announcement said.

But UNIFOR, the union representing the Canadian Seaway workers, issued a new notice Oct. 30, which renewed its intention to strike if an agreement over automation at locks is not reached or if not enough progress in talks is made by Monday, Nov. 3, at 5 p.m.

The SLSMC is prepared to proceed with the final stages of its contingency plan, should the need arise, the statement said.
