Two convicted of drug trafficking in Massena charged in new 205-count indictment in Albany area

Two men who served federal prison time for running a drug trafficking ring in Massena have been charged in a new 205-count indictment for running a similar operation in the Capital Region.

Matthew Malu, 30, and Tremel Rosario, 36, both of Albany, were arrested Oct. 23, along with 28 co-defendants.

Attorney General Barbara Underwood said they were trafficking cocaine, heroin and illegal prescription medication in Saratoga and Warren counties.

Authorities have dubbed the case “Operation Off Broadway,” which appears to be a reference to the nickname of one of the co-defendants, Rashaun “Broadway” Creel, 36, of Schenectady.

Malu and Rosario were arrested in 2013 as part of a drug ring in Massena that was feuding with a rival operation in the village, leading to numerous violent incidents. They ended up receiving respective federal prison sentences of 63 and 65 months. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate information, Malu was released Feb. 22, 2017. Information for Rosario was not available.

As alleged in the indictment stemming from the latest case, alleged Albany-based traffickers Rosario and Malu partnered to set up a cocaine distribution operation in Saratoga and Warren counties and across the Capital Region, according to Underwood’s office.

Rosario and Malu were captured over wiretaps as they allegedly set up shop, using “workers” to peddle their cocaine, heroin, and illegal prescription drugs, and running additional drugs up from Albany themselves or via a hired drug “mule” whenever the “workers” were running low on product, Underwood’s office said.

“As we allege, this trafficking ring flooded the Capital Region with cocaine and other drugs – fueling the addiction cycle that has ravaged communities across our state,” Underwood said in a prepared statement. “We will continue to work with our partners in law enforcement to cut off the flow of opioids and other drugs into our communities and drive traffickers like these out of business, part of our multi-levered approach to tackling New York’s evolving epidemic.”
