AKWESASNE -- Two Massena residents are facing charges for alleged offenses while working in the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Early Childhood Development Program.

Kimberly A. Moffitt, 45, of Massena is charged with seven counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of second-degree harassment, St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police said.

Melissa S. Dunkelberg, 33, of Massena is charged with 12 counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of second-degree harassment, police said.

Tribal officials refused to say what they are alleged to have done, when and to whom.

“There is no further information as it is still an active investigation by the tribal police,” said SRMT Director of Public Information Brendan White.

A statement from tribal police says “the investigation was conducted with the cooperation from the ECDP program and in collaboration with the New York State Office of Child and Family Services and their child care licenser.”

They had been fired from their jobs in May following "an internal program investigation focused on child endangerment concerns," the tribe said in a prepared statement.

"Following the terminations, the concerns and evidence were immediately turned over to the Tribal Police Department," the SRMT statement reads.

They were each arraigned in Bombay Town Court on Tuesday.

Moffitt was released on her own recognizance.

Dunkelberg was released under probationary supervision.
