Turning cloudier in North Country, rain and sleet predicted for Tuesday

After a couple of pretty sunny days this past weekend, high clouds will move into the North Country today as sleet and rain are predicted for Tuesday, the National Weather Service predicts.

Highs today in the St. Lawrence Valley will be about 35 degrees, and tonight, under mostly cloudy skies, the low will be about 27 with southeast winds.

Tuesday, sleet and rain are expected as temperatures rise in the low 40s with south winds picking up and gusting as high as 45 mph, the NWS says.

Tuesday night, forecasters predict rain will turn to snow as lows drop into the 20s. Gusty winds will continue.

The outlook for Wednesday is snowy weather.

The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:

• Today: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 35. South wind 5 to 7 mph.

• Tonight: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 27. Southeast wind 6 to 13 mph.

• Tuesday: A chance of sleet before 9am, then a chance of rain showers and sleet between 9am and 10am, then rain showers likely after 10am. Cloudy, with a high near 42. Breezy, with a south wind 14 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no sleet accumulation expected.

• Tuesday Night: Rain and snow showers likely, becoming all snow after 9pm. Cloudy, with a low around 23. Breezy, with a southwest wind 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 43 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

• Wednesday: Snow showers likely, mainly before 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 26. West wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

• Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 11. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening.

• Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 30. South wind 5 to 8 mph.

• Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 20. South wind 5 to 7 mph.

• Friday: A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. West wind around 6 mph.

• Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of snow showers before 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 19. West wind around 6 mph.

• Saturday: A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph.

• Saturday Night: A 50 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 23. South wind 5 to 8 mph.

• Sunday: A chance of rain and snow showers. Cloudy, with a high near 35. Southwest wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
