Train speed through Gouverneur, Richville, DeKalb, Canton, Potsdam, to increase from 25 to 40 mph

The authorized speed of freight trains on its rail line between Antwerp and Potsdam will increase from 25 mph to 40 mph effective Jan. 7.

The affected portion of the line, about 40 miles, includes 37 public grade crossings. The section of track passes through Canton, DeKalb Junction, Richville and Gouverneur.

The track is approved for the 40 mph speed limit consistent with Federal Railroad Administration standards, CSX announced today.

The speed increase will help reduce wait times for motorists at highway-rail intersections and improve the efficiency of rail operations, the announcement from CSX said.

CSX is based in Jacksonville, Fla., and is one of the nation’s leading transportation companies, providing rail, intermodal and rail-to-truck transload services on a network of approximately 21,000 miles of track in the eastern U.S.
