MORRISTOWN -- A tower garden made at Morristown Central will be on display at the National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference in Portland, Maine June 26-29.

Tiffany Irish is a special education teacher in Morristown, and has been exploring with a tower garden within the classroom growing a variety of vegetables. Melinda Conger is a science teacher in Morristown and also has a tower garden. The district was awarded a “Grow With Us” grant that helped purchase several of the gardens to integrate agriculture in the classroom.

“Providing care to a living organism requires patience and focus. Tending to a task as a group forms community relationships. And then eating the food that is grown gives a student ownership of one aspect of their lives,” Conger said in a news release.

“Ms. Conger and I are excited about gaining knowledge at the conference and incorporating it within our curriculum,” Irish said in the release.

During the event in Maine, teachers will network with educators from across the country, participate in workshops, and bring home resources with the latest technology, methods and tools for teaching agriculture and food systems in their classrooms.

This year’s conference theme is “Agriculture for ME - On Land and Sea.” Educators will receive a scholarship value of $1,200 which includes National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference registration, transportation, lodging, and 28 hours of CTLE Professional Development Credit.
