COLTON -- A fast-moving, severe thunderstorm was producing one inch diameter hail and destructive winds in excess of 70 miles per hour near Carry Falls Reservoir, shortly before noon today, according to the National Weather Service.
The service said the storm was moving northeast at 60 mph.
Members of the public reported at least one inch hail and winds estimated between 60 and 70 mph at South Edwards at 11:25 a.m., weather officials said.
The service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Azure Mountain-Lake Ozonia area. The thunderstorm is capable of producing deadly cloud-to-ground lightning, weather service officials said.
People observing damaging winds or hail are asked to notify the National Weather Service by calling toll free.1-800-863-4279.or by submitting a storm report at weather.Gov/Burlington.
Weather officials say those caught in such a thunderstorm should get to safety immediately when threatening weather approaches. Winds may knock down trees and power lines and damage buildings. Large hail may cause injury and damage property, they noted.
