POTSDAM – Three people from Potsdam face welfare fraud charges after receiving $37,000 in benefits investigators say they were not entitled to.
Samantha McGregor, 28, Steven Willard, 48, and Shane Weller, 50, all of 473 State Rt. 11B, were arrested Friday by St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies following an investigation by the county Department of Social Services’ Investigations Unit.
According to investigators, McGregor and Willard filed forged and false documents with social services from Jan. 1, 2005 to June 20, 2010, which fraudulently got them $33,926.38 in public assistance and food stamp benefits.
Weller allegedly filed fraudulent documents between Oct. 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010, for which he received $332.10 in benefits.
All three were arraigned in Pierrepont Town Court. McGregor was released in her own recognizance. Willard and Weller were sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility without bail.
