POTSDAM – Three people were injured just south of Norwood Sunday when a pickup backed into an oncoming minivan, ripping the back off the truck and spinning the van backwards, according to St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies.
Donald A. Gonyea, 25, of 3019 County Route 35, Norwood, was backing a 1995 Chevy pickup out of a drive onto County Route 35 shortly before 6:45 p.m. when it struck a van operated by Andy J. Dennis, 41, of 93 Pollock Rd., Madrid.
The impact tore off the back end of the pickup and spun the minivan around backwards before it came to rest further down the road, deputies said.
Dennis suffered cuts to his face from the accident, deputies said. His sons, Evan R., 13, and Ethan F., 8, were transported for evaluation of minor injuries to Canton-Potsdam Hospital by the Potsdam Rescue Volunteer Squad.
Gonyea was ticketed for failure to yield the right-of-way before entering the roadway and aggravated unlicensed operation third degree. He is to answer the charges in Potsdam Town Court later this month.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Norwood and West Potsdam fire departments and the Norwood Village Police Department.
