Three Canton residents jailed for possessing heroin, cocaine, marijuana

CANTON -- Three Canton residents were jailed on Thursday, following a St. Lawrence County Drug Task Force investigation that resulted in the seizure of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and cash.

Michael T. Matzell, 28, of 15 Hodskin St. Apt. 7 is charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell.

He was arraigned in Pierrepont Town Court and remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, Canton, without bail.

Freddy R. Coste, 20, and Larry K. Sanchez, 21, both of 80 Riverside Drive Bldg. 1 Apt. 17 are each charged with third- and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

The pair was arraigned in Canton Town Court and sent to the county jail in lieu of $25,000 bail or $50,000 bond.

Task force members executed a search warrant at Matzell's apartment around 10:50 p.m. Wednesday night and allegedly found cocaine, heroin, marijuana and U.S. currency.

At 2 a.m. Thursday, the task force stopped a vehicle on Hodskin Street and allegedly found Coste in possession of 42 grams of heroin. The executed a search warrant on his apartment at 10:15 a.m. Thursday and allegedly found cocaine and marijuana.

Canton Village Police said the investigation netted a total of 50 grams of heroin, 36 grams of cocaine and $4,500 U.S. currency. They say the heroin has a street value of $14,000 and the cocaine goes for about $10,000 on the street.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and more arrests are pending.

Canton police said they were joined in the investigation by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, Ogdensburg City Police, Potsdam Police, Gouverneur Police and the Department of Homeland Security.
