OSWEGATCHIE – An Ogdensburg man was jailed and arrested on numerous charges Thursday after he allegedly nearly crashed into a St. Lawrence County sheriff’s patrol car then fled at a high rate of speed.
Deputies said a patrol car had to “use evasive action to avoid a head-on collision” with a vehicle operated by Burton W. Spicer, 41, of 316 Caroline St., Apt. 2, Ogdensburg, on County Route 6 about 5:45 p.m.
Deputies said the near head-on crash occurred just after they saw Spicer’s car pass two uninvolved vehicles while traveling south.
Spicer then led Deputy Sean O’Brien on a high-speed chase as he attempted to flee, deputies said. Spicer was stopped and taken into custody at the intersection of County Route 4 and NYS Hwy. 812.
Burton was charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operation second degree, unsafe passing, failing to stop at a stop sign, failure to signal, inadequate lights and speed not reasonable and prudent.
He was arraigned in Canton Town Court and sent to St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility in lieu of $500. He is to face the charges in Oswegatchie Town Court at a later date, deputies said.
