POTSDAM -- In recognition of the 25th and 30th anniversaries of the 1981 and 1986 SUNY Potsdam Bears basketball teams' winning NCAA Division III National Championship titles under Coach Jerry Welsh, the Village of Potsdam, Town of Potsdam and St. Lawrence County have declared the dates of July 14 to July 17 to be 2011 SUNY Potsdam Men's Basketball Recognition Days.
The celebration dates will coincide with SUNY Potsdam's annual Reunion Weekend festivities.
Coach Welsh will be in attendance.
Former assistant coaches Stan Cohen, Bob Kuba and Bill Mitchell, and players Andrew Gregoire, Tim Harris, Barry Stanton and Troy Turner from the 1986 team will be at the ceremony.
Representing the 1981 team will be assistant coach Steve Kmack, who worked alongside Welsh and Cohen, as well as 1981 players Scott Franko, Ed Jachim, Waverly Patrick, Derrick Rowland, Maurice Woods and Leroy Witherspoon.
County, town and village officials have also been invited to attend the event.
On Saturday, July 16, there will be an official unveiling at 2:30 p.m. of the SUNY Potsdam Men's Basketball Photo Gallery on the second floor of Maxcy Hall, which will commemorate every Bears basketball team from 1948-49 to the present.
