The National Weather Service predicts hot weather and heavy rain around the area over the next couple of days.

Sunday is forecast to be mostly sunny with temperatures in the high 80s, possibly hitting 90 in Massena. Sunday night is predicted to be mostly clear in the mid-60s.

NWS says will be hot in most areas, with low-90s temperatures, and a few degrees cooler in the mountainous areas with a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms. Monday night is forecast to 80 percent chances of heavy rain with temperatures dropping to the low 70s.

Tuesday brings up to 70 percent chances of heavy rain with temperatures in the low 80s, and a partly cloudy night with temperatures dropping to the mid 50s.

The detailed forecast for the Potsdam area:

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 89. West wind 3 to 5 mph.

Sunday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 66. Light and variable wind becoming south around 5 mph.

Monday: Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 91. Heat index values as high as 95. Light south wind becoming southwest 5 to 9 mph in the morning.

Monday night: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 3am, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 3am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Increasing clouds, with a low around 71. South wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tuesday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 11am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 11am and 3pm, then a chance of showers after 3pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Southwest wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tuesday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 56. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 76. Northwest wind around 8 mph.

Wednesday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 54. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 82. West wind 3 to 5 mph.

Thursday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 59. South wind 3 to 5 mph.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 86. South wind 5 to 7 mph.

Friday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 64. South wind 5 to 7 mph.

Saturday: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 83. Southeast wind around 7 mph.
