Students returning, college classes starting in Canton and Potsdam

The population in the Canton and Potsdam area is swelling as the annual migration of college students from all over the country and the world is nearing its peak.

Students at SUNY Potsdam and Clarkson University start fall classes Monday.

In Canton, students at SUNY Canton started classes this past Monday and St. Lawrence University start classes for fall today.

Clarkson University is expecting a record first-year class of about 860, beating the old record in 1984 of 845 students.

SUNY Potsdam’s residence halls will be full again, with more than 2,500 of Potsdam's approximately 4,460 students moving in this year.

New incoming students from SUNY Potsdam’s Class of 2015 will arrive on campus during the high-energy move-in day on Friday beginning at 10 a.m. Roughly 920 freshmen and their families will be buzzing around campus and the village getting acquainted with the area and college life.

The New Student Convocation and Campus Welcome at Potsdam will be led by national speaker Joshua Fredenburg. He will give a keynote address about student leadership and service to welcome first-year students at 4:30 p.m. on Friday in Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall. After that, the Class of 2015 will plant a tree and pose for a class photo in the Bowman Hall Quad before attending the New Student Welcome Picnic at the Union Patio.

Several welcome back activities, including recreation events, will be offered during the New Student Activity Day on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 2 to 5 p.m. in Lehman Park. The event features a giant "slip 'n slide," cooperative games, canoeing and kayaking.

The Crane New Student Ensemble Concert, showcasing the talents of incoming Crane orchestral students as they perform a piece all together -- with little to no practice beforehand -- will take place at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27 in Hosmer Hall. This event is free, and the public is invited to attend.

The seventh annual Welcome Weekend Carnival will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28 in the Maxcy Hall Field House. The carnival is open to students, faculty, staff and their families, and will feature laser tag, an obstacle course, a wrecking ball game, a photo booth, and craft tables to help participants make their own street sign or stuffed animal. Representatives from more than 40 student clubs and organizations will also be on hand.
