Stewarts' Shops, which operates stores in Potsdam, Canton, Ogdensburg, Gouverneur, Massena and other locations throughout St. Lawrence County has issued a recall.

Stewarts is recalling its Sunshine Cranberry Delite 5 oz. with a best by date 1-18-17.

The recall comes from First Source of Tomawanda and is due to various items that may have been contaminated with Listeria.

Listeria monocytogenes, is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, the FDA says

The recalled items were distributed in the following states via retail stores: Indiana, Louisiana, Massachussets, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and South Carolina, between March 11 and May 21.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem, officials said.

The potential for contamination was noted after we received notification from our sunflower kernel supplier SunOpta pertaining to positive Listeria monocytogenes results," the FDA says.
