State troopers begin 'click it or ticket' seat-belt checkpoints; to run through June 5

State police troopers will join with local and county law enforcement officers statewide today through June 5 to see that motorists begin the summer travel season buckled up.

The high visibility enforcement mobilization will focus on seatbelt use day and night.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that nighttime passenger vehicle occupants are among those least likely to buckle up and most likely to die in crashes. Of those who died in nighttime crashes in 2009, nearly two-thirds were not wearing seatbelts.

The New York State Police set up more than 100 checkpoints and dedicated enforcement patrols during the two-week period.

During the two week enforcement mobilization a year ago, troopers issued more than 22,000 tickets for safety restraint violations, more than 1,500 of which were for not buckling up children.
