CANTON - The St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Department recently donated five surplus Taser units to the Canton Police Department.
The Canton Police Department is now able to outfit each of its officers with their own Taser device and holster, rather than having to share them.
This donation was a result of the St. Regis Mohawk Police Department’s recent upgrade to their own Taser equipment.
SRMTP Chief Matthew Rourke put the word out that the devices were available and CPD Chief Santimaw jumped at the chance to increase his department’s own supply, said a press release from the Canton Police Department.
Taser devices have been utilized by the Canton Police Department since April 2010. They are primarily designed to disrupt a subject’s nervous system by means of deploying a high voltage, low power current of electrical energy sufficient to cause pain and/or uncontrolled muscle contractions to override and individual’s voluntary motor response.
Tasers can de-escalate conflict and can reduce injuries to both officers and the public, said the press release.
