St. Lawrence County’s unemployment rate rose slightly in March compared to the same month last year but the number of people receiving benefits didn’t change, according to the state Department of Labor.
DOL said the March unemployment rate was 7.4 percent, up from 7.1 percent in March 2017. There were 3,200 people receiving unemployment benefits last month and the same month last year. There were 40,200 people working in the county last month, down from 41,100 on March 2017, DOL said.
Nearby Franklin County experienced a trend similar to St. Lawrence. In March, their unemployment rate rose to 6.9 percent last month from 6.8 percent the same month last year. There were 1,400 people receiving unemployment benefits in both months. They lost jobs, with a total of 18,300 last month, down from 18,500 in March 2017, DOL said.
To the west in Jefferson County, the unemployment rate rose to 8 percent last month from 7.6 percent in March 2017. There were 3,600 people on the dole in March, up from 3,400 the same month last year. They were 40,800 people employed last month, down from 41,500 in March 2017, DOL said.
