St. Lawrence County's unemployment rate significantly dropped in April from the previous month. In April, 7.7 percent of St. Lawrence County residents received unemployment insurance, compared to 9.2 percent in March, according to the state Department of Labor.
In April 2013, 9.4 percent of the county's residents received unemployment benefits, DOL said.
The total number of St. Lawrence County residents receiving benefits in April was 3,700 and 43,700 employed. In March, the same number were employed and 4,500 were on unemployment, according to the DOL.
In April 2013, 4,600 were unemployed and 44,000 were employed, the DOL says.
To our east in Franklin County, the April unemployment rate was 7.5 percent, a 2-percent top from the same month last year. The DOL says 1,600 received unemployment benefits and 19,800 were employed.
To our west in Jefferson County, the DOL says the unemployment rate was 8.2 percent, which is down 1.9 percent from April 2013. Total residents on unemployment was 4,700 and the total employed was 42,100.
