St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies warn of unnecessary travel following snowstorm

The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and the Office of Emergency Services continue to provide direction of only necessary travel during this snow event.

This should continue until the morning commute, a press release from the sheriff’s office said.

Snowfall ended overnight but winds may increased overnight and the wind chill factor dropped temperatures even more.

This is not a travel ban, the release said.

The release said:

“If you do need to be on the roads for necessary travel around the county please be aware and use caution as state, county and local highway departments work around the clock to keep roads open. Be cognizant of people operating personal plow and snow blower equipment and blind spots with high snow banks. Watch for people maybe walking in the roadways if sidewalks have not been cleared.

“Domestic pets should not be left outside, too cold for you, too cold for them.

“If you must travel keep your vehicle cleaned off and remember your headlight and taillights will be covered quickly, clean them off for your return trip. Operate with your headlights on.

“Check on neighbors and make sure to keep furnace vents clear of snow and ice to prevent working issues and toxic fumes from backing up into the living area. If using alternative heating devices make sure they are safe to use and keep clothing, debris away from the heat source.

“St. Lawrence County Law Enforcement from all agencies are working and there if needed. Our local fire and rescue volunteers would like to be able to stay in and take care of their own families, so stay safe and make good decisions during this snow event.”
