St. Lawrence County residents can apply for Empire State Highway Contractors Association apprenticeships

North Country residents can apply to the Empire State Highway Contractors Association for five carpenter (heavy highway) apprentices, two operating engineer (grading and paving equipment) apprentices, and five skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, according to the New York State Department of Labor.

They will recruit from May 4 through April 5, 2017.

Applications are available online at www.empirestatehighwaycontractors.org.

People can also get applications at the Empire State Highway Contractors Association, 2481 Higby Road, Frankfort, from 8:30 a.m. to noon on the first Wednesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

Applications can only be submitted on the first Wednesday of each month from 8:30 a.m. to noon, excluding legal holidays, at the Empire State Highway Contractors Association.

The committee requires that applicants:

• Be at least 18 years old.

• Have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).

• Pass a physical exam, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.

• Pass a drug screening, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.

• Submit a signed affidavit stating that they are physically able to do the work of the trade, which may include lifting and carrying materials weighing at least 50 pounds (some jobs require no heavy lifting while others will require heavy lifting on a daily basis).

• Have a valid driver’s license in order to operate company vehicles.

• Have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes. Related instruction classes will be held in Frankfort, NY.

• Provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
