CANTON -- Spike strips were used to stop a Dickinson Center man who fled the scene of an accident in Lawrence Monday night leading police on a pursuit from Canton to Gouverneur, according to St. Lawrence County sheriff's deputies.
Deputies said they received a report of a hit-and-run accident on State Highway 11B involving a 2007 Dodge pickup travelling west that had rear-ended another vehicle.
The driver of the pickup then allegedly turned its four-way flashers on before taking off at a high rate of speed passing numerous cars.
Deputies located the car a short time later on East Main Street in Canton. The driver of the vehicle failed to comply with emergency lights to pull over and fled south on County Route 25 to County Route 24 into the Village of Edwards. The driver then headed on to State Highway 58 toward Gouverneur.
Officers deployed a spike strip just south of the Village of Gouveneur. The driver’s side tires of the suspects’ vehicle were deflated, deputies said.
The driver continued into the village and was taken into custody after the vehicle stopped on U.S. Highway 11.
The driver Marvin M. Trim, 53, was taken to Gouverneur Hospital and treated and later transported to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center for a mental health evaluation.
Deputies said their investigation continues and that charges are pending.
State police and the Gouverneur Police Department assisted with the incident.
