The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office says they are investigating a local instance of the so-called “creepy clowns” phenomenon.
Police departments around the United States have received complaints of people in clown costumes allegedly lurking in public, some of whom have been arrested for offenses such as disorderly conduct and making terroristic threats.
On Thursday afternoon, the sheriff’s office released a statement saying they are probing threats to local students via Facebook.
Investigators say students at Edwards-Knox, Potsdam and Hermon-DeKalb central school districts have reported receiving threats “from user profiles depicting clowns,” according to Det. Sgt. Tom Caringi.
“The sheriff’s office is actively pursuing all leads and is taking computer-based crimes such as these very seriously,” Caringi said in a prepared statement.
He asks anyone with information on the threats to call 379-2222.
