The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office has announced a “travel advisory” through Wednesday for all of St. Lawrence County, with only necessary travel during the predicted “Winter Storm Maya.”

Meanwhile, the Village of Massena has announced an overnight parking ban until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

“Expect heavy snow totals with areas of sleet and winds will increase and hamper visibility,” said Sheriff Wells in a prepared statement.

“This is not a travel ban. Check for area cancelations and make sure you do need to be on the roads for necessary travel.”

His statement follows”

“When traveling around the county please be aware and use caution as State, County and Local Highway Departments work around the clock to keep roads open. Be cognizant of people operating personal plow and snow blower equipment and blind spots with high snow banks.

“Watch for people walking in the roadways if sidewalks have not been cleared. Domestic pets should not be left outside, too cold for you, too cold for them.

“If you must travel, keep your vehicle cleaned off and remember your headlight and taillights will be covered quickly, clean them off for your return trip. Operate with your headlights on.

“Check on neighbors and make sure to keep furnace vents clear of snow and ice to prevent working issues and toxic fumes from backing up into the living area.

“If using alternative heating devices make sure they are safe to use and keep clothing, debris away from the heat source.

“St. Lawrence County Law Enforcement from all agencies are working and there if needed. Our local fire and rescue volunteers would like to be able to stay in and take care of their own families, so stay safe and make good decisions during this snow/sleet event.”

In Massena, in order to allow Department of Public Works employees to safely remove snow, and treat and maintain streets and roadways, parking will prohibit from 10 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. Wednesday, said Department of Public Works Superintendent, Hassan A. Fayad.

He declared a Snow Removal/ Emergency pursuant to Village Code 280.15.1.

Massena Police are reminding Village residents and plow operators not to plow snow onto sidewalks or across the roadways. It is illegal to cover sidewalks and to plow across the roadways.

Mayor Timmy J. Currier is asking for everyone’s cooperation during this storm.

“Our public works staff and public safety officials will be working around the clock to keep our citizens safe and respond to any emergency that may arise. Our public works crews and staff are prepared to deal with whatever mother nature sends our way. Cooperation from our citizens during this storm and while we recover from it is vital to ensuring we keep everyone safe,” said Currier.
