MASSENA – Sen. Chuck Schumer announced during a stop at the Eisenhower Locks Tuesday afternoon that he is calling on the federal Department of Transportation to build a new visitor's center at the locks to replace an aging 60-year-old structure.
Local officials have been asking for work at the visitor's center as the current structure is no longer conducive to attracting tourists to the locks.
Sen. Schumer said the new visitor's center would have 21st Century amenities.
Seaway officials said visitors from 49 states - North Dakota was the exception - visited the locks last year.
