HEUVELTON – High school Section X volleyball teams from St. Lawrence County recently donated $2,445.73 to the Cancer Services Program (CSP) of St. Lawrence County Public Health Department.
Members of the teams wanted to do something in memory of Stephanie Putney, who lost her battle with breast cancer this past July, according to Susan Hathaway, Director of Public Health, Kindra Cousineau, CSP Program Coordinator, Catherine Field, CSP Case Manager, and Bonnie Hayden, CSP Data Manager.
Putney was the physical education teacher for Heuvelton Central School and officiated girl’s volleyball games, along with refereeing lacrosse and soccer games. She was a real advocate for women’s sports, the CSP staff noted.
“The CSP would like to extend our gratitude for this generous donation and commend all the girls for their commitment to raising breast cancer awareness in our community,” said the CSP staff in a prepared statement.
“The donations will be used for women in our program who may have any uncovered costs related to breast cancer screening, diagnosis and/or treatment. Again, thank you to the Section X volleyball teams!”
