MASSENA – The binational Montreal-Lake Ontario section of the St. Lawrence Seaway officially closed for the 2017 navigation season Thursday night, Jan. 11.
The Seaway Development Corporation said the last remaining commercial ocean vessel in the system, the downbound (eastbound) Federal Biscay, “safely transited the Canadian St. Lambert Lock in Montreal and exited the Seaway,” the announcement said.
The U.S. sector of the Seaway closed on Jan. 9 with the downbound transit of the Pacific Huron through the Snell Lock at 7:26 a.m.
The closure was delayed as a grounded freighter and a ship that got iced into one of the locks stopped traffic through the waterway just as the planned closing date arrived.
“This completes the binational waterway’s 59th navigation season” the statement said.
