Russell man identified as pedestrian killed in accident on U.S. Highway 11 in Potsdam Saturday

POTSDAM – A Russell man was killed Jan. 3 at approximately 11:30 a.m. following a car-pedestrian collision on U.S. Highway 11, according to state police.

The preliminary investigation revealed victim, 56-year-old Richard A. Mackin was walking on the north shoulder of U.S. Highway 11 when he was struck from behind by a 2007 Hyundai Sonata, operated by 25-year-old Zachary S. Morris of Potsdam, who was traveling north.

Mackin was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene by St. Lawrence County Coroner June Wood.

His body was removed to Canton-Potsdam Hospital where an autopsy was performed on Jan. 4 by Dr. Samuel Livingstone, troopers said.

The cause of death was reportedly determined to be cerebral avulsion resulting from the collision. Coroner June Wood ruled the manner of death to be accidental.

Morris was transported to the Canton Potsdam Hospital for diabetic shock and later released, officers said.

Troopers said they continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
