Trick-or-treaters and their minders out tonight might need some protection from the rain.

A rain system established over the North Country today will persist right through the end of the week, the National Weather Service predicts.

While this is bringing slightly warmer air into the region, deeper moisture will also advance into St. Lawrence County. As a result, precipitation is expected to be widespread for the rest of today before tapering off later tonight.

But then another surge of moisture moves in for Thursday and Friday with widespread rain returning to the North Country.

Total rainfall amounts through Friday night could amount to more than an inch, forecasters say.

The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:

• This Afternoon: Rain. High near 49. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

• Tonight: Rain before 2am, then a slight chance of rain after 4am. Low around 40. Southwest wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Thursday: Rain likely, mainly after 2pm. Cloudy, with a high near 47. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Thursday Night: Rain. Low around 38. Calm wind becoming northeast 5 to 8 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

• Friday: Rain. High near 48. Northeast wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
