With rain predicted through Sunday, National Weather Service issues flood warning for North Country

With rain predicted through Sunday, the National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for St. Lawrence County as well as the rest of northern New York.

Warmer temperatures combined with rainfall will lead to rising river levels Friday through Saturday, the weather service says. This will lead to potential breakup of river ice and possible ice jam related flooding.

Rainfall amounts will be greatest in the northern Adirondacks, which will see the greatest potential for flooding, though ice jams are possible throughout the North Country.

The National Weather Service warns ice jams are very unpredictable and can break up, move, and jam again very quickly. If jams occur, water backing up behind the jam can flood areas under deep water with surprising speed.

Street flooding is also likely due to melting snow, particularly if storm drains have not been cleared.

Tonight, rain is predicted, with lows around 41. Southeast winds between 14 and 17 mph are expected, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible, the weather service says.

Friday, more rain is likely, mainly before 10 a.m., with highs near 47. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch are possible.

Friday night, a chance of rain showers is expected before 10 p.m., and there is a chance of rain and snow showers between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., then a chance of snow showers after 4 a.m. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Saturday, there is a chance of snow showers before 10 a.m., then a chance of rain and snow showers between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., then a chance of rain showers after 1 p.m. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Saturday night, rain and snow showers likely, becoming all snow after 10 p.m. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Sunday: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 28. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 6.
