Psychiatrists are general medicine physicians who have completed additional training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health diseases and conditions. These may range from clinical depression to schizophrenia, and can include learning disabilities, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and substance abuse diseases such as alcoholism. Psychiatrists use a variety of treatments for mental health disorders. These may include medication, behavior modification, group and individual counseling, or sometimes referral for surgery, depending on the type and stage of disease as well as the patient’s physical condition, family and community support services available to the patient, and other factors.
