The New York Power Authority (NYPA) says the state Department of Labor (DOL) has certified four of NYPA’s apprentice training programs.
The certification follows several years of coordinated efforts by NYPA management and the unionized labor from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Locals 2032 and 2104 to bolster training and receive certification.
The recognition covers training programs for mechanics, electricians, transmission linemen and hydroelectric plant operators at NYPA’s upstate facilities represented by IBEW locals 2032 and 2104.
The DOL’s registration and approval means that workers who complete one of the four apprenticeship programs will be awarded a journeyperson card from the state, attesting to that individual’s qualifications and competence should they join another industry organization in the future.
Apprenticeships are the traditional career springboard for NYPA’s craft workers. Approximately 60 NYPA employees are currently enrolled in the apprentice programs, with those individuals at different levels toward completing the apprenticeships, depending on when they began the training, which commences every September.
Training was previously provided primarily from internal NYPA resources but has now been expanded to include more external support, including State University of New York colleges. This will allow the enrollees in the apprenticeship programs to also earn college credits in their areas of specialization.
IBEW Local 2032 represents the crafts at the St. Lawrence Power Project, Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Project and the Frederick R. Clark Energy Center.
