POTSDAM -- Potsdam Municipal Airport-Damon Field is set to receive $110,558 for improved runway lighting.

Rep. Bill Owens (D-Plattsburgh) announced the grant from the Federal Aviation Administration Monday.

A press release from his office said the improved lighting is part of a broader plan to widen the runway to accommodate larger airplanes and increased demand for air travel.

“Access to air travel and shipping can be a determining factor for businesses considering relocating to, or starting up in, our region,” said Owens. “Investing in this airport upgrade supports the growth of businesses that are already established in the area and encourages travel by tourists and residents as well.”

Village of Potsdam Mayor Steve Yurgartis expressed support for the funding. “Businesses here are expanding and have expressed the need for air transportation as part of their business operations,” he said. “This grant allows the village to continue to develop our plans to improve the airport. It means that these and other businesses can expand as the airport capability improves, attracting yet more businesses to our area. I want to say a big thank you to Congressman Owens for his continued support for our airport; it has made a big difference to the Village of Potsdam.”

The Potsdam Municipal Airport is a public airport maintaining 3,703 feet of asphalt runway.
