Potsdam Public Library raising money for new tier, computer workstations, classroom and other improvements

POTSDAM – The Potsdam Public Library has raised $7,500 toward a goal of more than $120,000 for the first phase of a project to increase space, add computer workstations, a classroom, and an enclosed children's area, and to update the heating and cooling system.

The plan calls for adding space by way of a new second-floor area over about a third of the high-ceilinged first floor. Shelving and a computer area would occupy the upstairs area while the space below would be configured for a classroom and a children's area enclosed in glass.

Based on patron surveys, the plan has also included restoration of the library to its original historic look. The space was previously used as a theater and still retains some of those features, including stage columns, hardwood floors and a ticket window in the lobby.

A NYS Construction Grant of $360,000 the library has applied for could cover about 65 percent of the cost of the first phase. The library needs donations for the remaining 35 percent and is calling on the public for help.

The fundraising campaign has amassed about $7,500 since the start of the campaign late in the fall.

“It’s early, but we’re still pretty pleased with that so far,” said Library Director Annie Chase.

She said announcements of the library grant awards is expected in July.

In the nearly a year and a half since she started in the director’s job, Chase said the plan has been formalized, but that it has been “in the works for much longer, and was discussed probably for over a decade.”

Those wishing to donate to the library project can do so through the library's website at https://www.potsdamlibrary.org/donate.
