POTSDAM -- The Potsdam Public Library has been chosen to receive the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce’s 2014 "Pride in Potsdam" award.

“The nomination of the Potsdam Public Library for this award had overwhelming support,” said chamber executive director Marylee Ballou.

“It has been an amazing experience just to read through all the letters…from longstanding library patrons…some for 10, 25, 50 years as well as parents who appreciate how the library helps them to build special bonds and memories with their children.”

The award reflects the ongoing efforts of the library to enhance the quality of life in Potsdam, Ballou said. The library has engaged in many specific activities that resulted in positive acclaim for the library as well as the community.

The Potsdam Public Library claimed the highest circulation in the entire North Country Library System in 2012 and 2013 and continues to have high circulation rates. They also lead others in the North Country Library System in the number of hours they are open, seven days a week including four evenings per week.

Supporters Norman and Linda Jones said in their letter of support, “Throughout the years the leadership of the Potsdam Public Library has always been one of focused attention to the needs of the community and this sense of commitment is evident in the friendly and dedicated staff. They welcome community comments and requests, indeed seek ‘outside’ input into how the library could better serve the community.”

Another supporter said, “An excellent library like Potsdam Public Library helps form the foundation of a community where people want to live and therefore where businesses can thrive.”

The library staff and volunteers work to provide for the needs of community, frequently partnering with other local groups on projects.

Children’s Librarian Sarah Sachs has been a vital asset to the Potsdam Kiwanis Club in operating its Headstart Reading Program. The library also has working partnerships with Literacy of NNY, the Vet Center in Watertown, local public schools, the American Association of University Women, and many groups.

The award will be presented at the Potsdam Chamber annual dinner Nov. 13 in Clarkson University’s Cheel Campus Center Barben Rooms. The cost of the “Simply Italian Buffet” dinner will be $30 per person. Cocktails will be served starting at 6 p.m. and the dinner at 6:30.
