POTSDAM – The Potsdam Police Department received numerous calls throughout the day from local residents who had received calls from subjects purporting to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
The calls were from male and female subjects, but also an automated message, officers said.
The caller insists that the recipient has been cited by the IRS for a miscalculation in previous years’ tax returns. The recipient is ordered to contact a phone number in order to provide payment in order to avoid imprisonment.
Thus far, police said area residents have reported the following phone numbers as associated with these fraudulent calls are:
• (240)437-4144
• (903)706-3127
• (434)865-0954
• (954)812-3487
• (434)865-0954
• (336)338-4637
• (502)706-0391
• (299)477-0008
Police are reminding to ignore phone calls with phone numbers that they are unfamiliar with. If the call is answered and the caller indicates that they are from the IRS and are attempting to collect funds, the recipient should inform the subject that they are aware of the fraud and hang up the phone.
