POTSDAM – Officers of the Potsdam Police Department responded to 2,437 incidents and made 501 arrests in the third quarter this year, more than in the second quarter.

Potsdam Police Chief Mark Murray reports that those numbers were very close to the report for July through September 2017, when officers responded to 2,520 incidents and made 502 arrests.

In the second quarter this year, April through June, the department responded to 2,010 incidents and made 322 arrests.

Murray delivered his reports for the second and third quarters this year at the village Board of Trustees meeting Oct. 15.

Police made 540 traffic stops in the second quarter, issuing 383 verbal warnings and issuing summonses to 157 drivers for a total of 253 tickets with 12 citations for alleged driving while intoxicated. Eighty-one motor vehicle accidents were investigated.

In the third quarter, police made 771 traffic stops, 519 verbal warnings and issued tickets to 252 drivers for a total of 403 charges, with 12 DWI citations. Eighty-five motor vehicle accidents were investigated.

In the second quarter, Murray reported, 16 felony charges, 25 misdemeanor charges and 31 violation charges were laid, there were 12 drug arrests and 25 domestic incidents were investigated.

In the third quarter, 15 felony charges, 33 misdemeanor charges and 51 violation charges were laid, there were 11 drug arrests and 17 domestic incidents were investigated.

The department collects fees for such services as checking records, taking fingerprints, and confirming vehicle inspections, among other things. In the second quarter, people paid $915 for those services, and $690 in the third quarter.

Murray noted particular incidents, such as the arrest of suspect Storm Rivera for alleged forcible rape and the arrest of suspect Alberto Boza for alleged criminal possession of a firearm in the second quarter, and the arrests of suspect Andrew Francis for alleged robbery at a Sunoco station, giving credit there for help from other police agencies and particularly the effort of Potsdam Police Lt. Michael Ames, and the arrest of suspect Colin Cunningham on a forcible rape charge.

And Murray gave special thanks to Martin, Harding & Mazzotti LLP Attorneys at Law for sponsoring the department’s Oct. 6 bike helmet giveaway, where more than 200 helmets were passed out.
