The assessor for the towns of Potsdam and Morristown wants to remind St. Lawrence County that the deadline is March 1 to claim property tax exemptions such as the STAR exemption.
This state guideline applies to new applications and any renewals for the upcoming 2015 tax roll year, according to Assessor James Snyder.
Almost all exemptions are due by March 1 for St. Lawrence County with the exception of the City of Ogdensburg. The city is on a different cycle and their deadline is April 1.
Those who own their homes and they serve as their primary residence should apply for the STAR exemption if they haven’t already, Snyder said.
Home owners who will be 65 by next Dec. 31 and make under $83,300 adjusted gross income should apply for the Enhanced STAR, Snyder advises. Those who are married need only one spouse to meet the age requirement to qualify.
There are hundreds of exemptions that may be available for property tax relief in your taxing jurisdiction, Snyder said.
Some of the more common ones other than STAR are Aged, Capital Improvement, Disability/Limited Income and Veterans. There are also renewals of agricultural land exemptions, firefighter exemptions, and exemptions for clergy, among others.
“It’s a good idea to check with your local assessor to see what you may qualify for in your town or city,” Snyder wrote in a press release.
Snyder said that people who don’t apply by the deadline this year will see their exemption set for the 2016 tax year.
