POTSDAM -- The joint town and village Recreation Committee has taken action to crack down on alleged incidents of parents consuming alcohol in Pine Street Arena during Potsdam High School hockey games.
While not pointing to any specific incidents of drunken behavior in the stands, the writer of an anonymous letter to the committee expressed concern about alcohol consumption by parents there.
Committee Chair Rose Rivezzi reported at the Tuesday, Feb. 13 Town Council meeting that Recreation Director Trey Smutz has taken some steps to inform fans of the prohibition against alcohol in the arena during school events.
“I read a ‘code of conduct’ before the final two games” of Potsdam’s season, Smutz said in a telephone interview.
He said he based his code on a SUNY Potsdam document.
He also confirmed that volunteer “chaperones” had gone out to the Sandstoner Park parking lot to check the situation there.
Rivezzi said that there would be more reminders in the next hockey pre-season period later this year.
