Potsdam, Canton planning Arbor Day events

Saturday will be busy in Potsdam with a tree planting, a parade and town-wide spring cleanup scheduled.

Arbor Day is officially Friday, April 27, but the village thought it would be appropriate to hold its tree-planting in Lions Fall Island Park behind Evans and White Hardware on Maple Street on Saturday, April 21, the day before Earth Day.

A new thornless honey locust tree will be planted in the park at 11 a.m., where Potsdam Lions volunteers will be cleaning up the park for spring.

All around town, volunteers will be taking part in the annual spring cleanup. Several organizations have arranged their own assignments, but volunteers are welcome to meet at the Rescue Squad building on Elm Street at 10 a.m. to pick up gloves, tools, trash bags and cleanup assignments for chores in yards, parks, cemeteries, and roadsides.

And Saturday is the day of the annual Pride Parade between the two colleges. The fifth annual celebration of LGBT pride starts at 10 a.m. at Clarkson University, finding its way to Pierrepont Avenue, then up to SUNY Potsdam for the conclusion.

The village of Canton will commemorate National Arbor Day on April 27.

The village mayor proclaimed the date as the local Arbor Day observance at the village board meeting held Wednesday, April 16.

As in years past, there will be tree planting ceremony involving village officials.
