POTSDAM – The village Board of Trustees has appointed Potsdam Police Lt. Mark Murray as interim chief of police to serve in that position for not more than six months.

Current Chief Kevin Bates is retiring and will leave at the end of the month.

Appointed as interim lieutenant is Sgt. Mike Ames.

Patrol Officer Clint Perrigo has been appointed as interim sergeant.

Each of those appointments is for no more than six months, according to Mayor Ron Tischler.

Two new patrol officers were also appointed at Monday’s board meeting.

John Smith of Potsdam has been added to the force as a trainee with a probationary period of three months. He has had police academy training and has been with the Gouverneur Police Department for a year and a half.

Jerrid LaVoie, a dispatcher with the Potsdam Police Department, has been appointed as a probationary patrol officer. LaVoie, also from Potsdam, will get training at the St. Lawrence County Law Enforcement Academy at SUNY Canton starting in January. His probationary period will be for a minimum of six months and not more than a year.

Tischler said he and the board now will begin reviewing candidates for the chief of police position.
