Update 3:42 p.m. March 27 -- State police say they are no longer seeking help from the public because they have identified the woman they were searching for in connection with a purse left behind by a Walmart shopper. Police say further details will soon be released

POTSDAM -- State police are looking for a woman who found a purse left behind by another shopper March 20 at the Walmart in Potsdam but didn’t turn it in.

Troopers said the woman who forgot her purse told them it had more than $800 in it.

Trooper Greg Hayes said the first woman had parked her cart in the vestibule and pulled her shopping bags out of it and leaving the store, forgetting her purse.

When she realized what she had done, she returned to the store but no one had turned the purse in.

Police and store personnel pulled video recordings and saw the woman who found the purse. She can be seen picking it up out of the cart, looking around, apparently speaking briefly with some people, hesitating, and then leaving the store.

They are circulating images of the woman in the hope that someone will identify her.

Anyone with information as to the identity of the woman is asked to call the state police in Canton at 379-0012.
