NORFOLK – A Massena man was arrested for driving while intoxicated following a hit-and-run accident that took place after he fled the scene of an alleged domestic violence incident, according to state police.

Troopers responded to a reported domestic incident on SH 420 at 3:13 p.m. and while en route officers were advised that a subject involved in the incident has left the scene travelling north towards the Village of Massena.

John W. Holmes, 27, was located operating a Toyota pickup truck at a high rate of speed and tailgating an uninvolved vehicle, police said.

A traffic stop was initiated on State Highway 420 in the town of Norfolk, officers said. Holmes was subsequently arrested for aggravated DWI, troopers said.

Holmes was found to have been involved in a hit-and-run collision on SH 420 prior to the traffic stop, where his vehicle struck another vehicle causing property damage. There were no injuries reported.

Holmes’ vehicle had front-end damage consistent with the motor vehicle crash, officers said.

His blood alcohol content (BAC) was determined to be 0.11 percent, police said.

Holmes had a prior DWI conviction in the preceding ten years out of the Massena Town Court and also held a revoked license, trooper said.

He was charged with felony DWI, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, felony, an ticketed for use of a vehicle without an interlock device, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, following too closely, unlicensed operation, unsafe speed, and a license plate violation, officers said.

He was arraigned at the Massena Town Court and released under the supervision of probation. He is to reappear in Town of Norfolk Court at a later date.
