Police will crack down on substance-impaired driving in St. Lawrence County and around the state May 27 to 30, covering the long Memorial Day weekend.

St. Lawrence County Stop-DWI says police agencies throughout the county will participate in conjunction with state agencies.

Memorial Weekend is historically a deadly period for impaired driving. Memorial Day weekend is the traditional beginning of summer, STOP-DWI said. In addition there will be thousands of parties and barbeques to celebrate graduations, proms, communions, and confirmations now that the better weather has finally arrived. This combination of factors equates to more people on the road in general and more people specifically driving impaired.

As part of the crackdowns, state police, county sheriff’s and local law enforcement agencies across the state will be out in force in this across-the-board effort to reduce the number of impaired driving injuries and deaths.

As part of the New York State STOP-DWI Enforcement Crackdowns, St. Lawrence County STOP-DWI will be working with New York State Police, Potsdam Police Department, Ogdensburg Police, and Norfolk Police Department in their efforts to protect everyone from substance impaired drivers either by alcohol and/or drugs during this busy time of year.

The funding for this crackdown was provided by the New York State STOP-DWI Foundation through a grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. During this time period, law enforcement will vigorously enforce laws related to driving while impaired with special emphasis on impaired driving either by alcohol or drugs.

“There will be no warnings,” said Michele James. “Our message is simple—Don’t drink or drug and drive. Have a Plan. The personal and financial costs are too great. ”

While STOP-DWI efforts across New York have led to significant reductions in the numbers of alcohol and drug related fatalities, still too many lives are being lost because of crashes caused by drunk or impaired drivers. Highly visible, highly publicized efforts like the STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign aim to further reduce the incidence of substance impaired driving.

All drinking driving fines collected from convicted drunk drivers fund the St. Lawrence County STOP-DWI Program.
