OGDENBSURG – Heuvelton photographer Betty Steele was honored by the Ogdensburg Historic Commission, City Council and the New York State Senate Monday.
Steele was given the Historic Commission’s Elizabeth Baxter award by president Kathie Wade. Wade said it was the first time the award has been given in 16 years.
She said Steele shared all of the same qualities of Elizabeth Baxter who documented and preserved Ogdensburg’s history while staying out of the limelight.
She said Steele has documented the history of Ogdensburg using her camera and has a catalog of more than 600,000 photographs.
Wade said Steel has captured nearly all of Ogdensburg’s historic events from the major construction of the Ogdensburg-Prescott bridge to holiday events.
A fair size crowd attended the meeting to pay tribute to Steele and Wade wagered nearly anyone in attendance of the city hall meeting had probably been caught on camera by Steele at some point.
Steel was also honored by Mayor Wayne Ashley with proclamation and received a commendation from State Senator Patty Ritchie. Jim Reagen, a Ritchie staffer, who is running unopposed for the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators, presented the senate award.
A small recess was also held following the presentation.
